Biobank of human associated microbiome samples

Since 2016, we have collected and preserved microbiome samples from 1,500+ individuals living in under-represented populations in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia (yellow dots on the map). Additional sampling trips will occur soon (blue dots on the map).

Biobank of bacterial isolated strains

We cultured, isolated and sequenced the whole genome of > 10,000 bacterial strains derived from stool microbiome samples. This collection clusters in 450+ species groups and covers a wide range of bacterial taxa across multiple phyla, including from some groups that are previously considered as unculturable.

Access to biomaterial and data

The biomaterial in the biobanks are available to advance microbiome research worldwide and is distributed via the Microbiome Experimental Services Platform led by Prof. Poyet at Kiel University. Learn more here.

Access to associated microbiome data, including sequencing data and metadata, is handled directly by the Global Microbiome Conservancy. Data access requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and require compliance with ethical approvals, informed consent, and data access agreements.
